The role of Facebook Data for Good tools for COVID-19 response, routine immunizations, and development programs and what this means for COVID-19 vaccination in 2021.

Over the past year, humanitarian aid, public health and development programs have begun to leverage large-scale data resources from technology companies to help solve public problems on an unprecedented scale. Facebook Data for Good has released some of the most heavily used datasets in this effort, with data resources ranging from population mobility and displacement to economic impact and recovery, to health and risk communications, and others. As these use cases and data sets continue to proliferate, important new questions also continue to emerge concerning privacy and data protection, capacity building and data literacy, ethics, policy and program operations. Direct Relief and CrisisReady, in partnership with NetHope, has completed a review of the impact of Facebook’s Data for Good tools from the past year. This panel will explore key use cases from 2020 and engage debate on the implications of Facebook’s model for key 2021 issues including the global COVID-19 vaccination campaign.
